The harmin Rejecting the Shadow

We are all comprised of the totality of both darkness and light. You know yourself well enough to know that, when the lights go out and you’re stuck with your own thoughts, you’ve thought about things you, yourself, are ashamed to be thinking – and you certainly wouldn’t ever want anyone else to know about.

So, we do our best to shove those thoughts away. To deny their existence. To bury them out of sight and out of mind. Except that they don’t ever go away. They’re always there, just behind the closed door. And, the more we try to avoid them, the stronger they become. Then, when we least expect it, these parts of ourselves bust through their prison doors and make a grand appearance in our lives.

The moment when we:

  • Do or say the very thing we promised we would never do or say
  • Become the very thing we most despise in another person
    Act out our inner rage after a lifetime of playing “the nice one”
  • Display our jealousy after pretending that we’re “the easy going one”
  • Are exposed for being a fraud after working so hard to prove we’re not “dishonest and manipulative”
  • Selfishly sabotage another because we’re “insecure and controlling”

If gone unchecked for a long period of time, it becomes easier and easier for us to convince ourselves that we are everything except the thing we fear the most … that we are

  • Angry
  • Insecure
  • Unworthy
  • Dishonest
  • Manipulative
  • Greedy
  • Out of integrity
  • Vengeful
  • A coward

… and that also includes all the positive things we are terrified of being …

  • Compassionate

  • Loving
  • Courageous
  • Inspiring
  • Sexy
  • Creative
  • Generous
  • Powerful

In extreme cases, we can even become our shadow. The story of Darth Vader is such a beautiful, yet tragic example of a good man who lost the one thing he loved most – his wife – regardless of his efforts to save her. He eventually gave in to his dark side and became the thing he never wanted to be.

We see this in everyday society – in political leaders, religious sects and in the people we know personally. In fact, we act out our shadow qualities every day without even realizing we’re doing it.

When we’re able to recognize our shadow side and acknowledge its presence, we can learn to integrate it in healthy ways that prevent us from extreme personality and behavioral swings that could lead to the destruction of our relationships, career path, family dynamic – and our own peace of mind.

All these parts of ourselves we deemed wrong or bad also developed and honed our ability to lie in order to hide our faults. When we ate too many cookies, we lied. When we excluded our younger sibling, we lied. When we cheated, we lied.

Who we are is based on our perception and interpretation of past experiences, memories, emotions, beliefs and values. Much of our programming dictates who we believe ourselves to be – or not to be.
